Learning Your Camera: Class #1 (Beginner)

Introduction Class

Are you interested in learning more about using your camera? Want to learn what all those different modes mean? Trying to figure out why your pictures turn out too dark, too bright or blurry? I can help you!

Here are some of the topics we will discuss in this class:

  • Basic camera care and rules (basic camera functions, navigating the menus, keeping it clean, the proper method of changing lenses, changing memory cards & formatting, keeping the camera stable with or without a tripod, etc.)
  • Learning what the numbers mean on the lenses
  • Different lens choices and their basic characteristics
  • Focus basics in the auto-focus mode, single and multi-point focus (and manual)
  • Introduction to the Mode dial (M, AV, TV, P)
  • ISO Speeds (How they can affect your images)
  • Shutter Speeds (Introduction: Understanding the appropriate speeds for each subject)
  • Aperture sizes / F stops (Introduction: Understanding the relationship of the lens opening w/ volume of light entering the camera)
  • Capturing an image that isn't too dark or too light
  • White balance. Get the correct colors on your images
  • Special features of YOUR camera.
  • Plus many more!

Classes run in 3-Hour blocks and will typically be broken down into two sections (1-2hrs Lesson Time & 1-1.5hrs Shooting / Practice Time)
As this is an introduction class, all types of cameras and levels of users are welcome. If you have a DSLR (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.) A Micro 4/3 (Olympus, Panasonic), Or any type of digital Camera from ANY brand  you are headed in the right direction. If you happen to be shooting film you are of course welcome as well, however the majority of the class revolves around Digital Photography.
Class Requirements:
  • You MUST bring your own camera.
  • I ask that you at least have a BASIC understanding of the functions, just so we can jump right into learning.
